Oh we want to volunteer..
We want to volunteer
But we're not allowed to do it anymore.
We mowed the public lots
And the cemetary plots,
And we kept it looking neat,but not no more.

They say we're now passe'
These are city jobs that pay
And we cannot undermine the working man.
So the weeds are growing great
And the grass is left to fate,
And the volunteers are left out of the plan.

Oh we want to volunteer,
We have done it now for years,
But we find we don't fit in the city plan.
A little civic pride
Is beyond the Great Divide.
You don't do work for nothing,
That's their stand.

Though we'd like to volunteer
As we've always volunteered
We just can't do a thing, our hands are tied.
We'd like to do our turn
But the money's there to burn,
So folks we'd like to tell you that we tried.

We would love to volunteer,
But unpaid work's a "no-no" say the brass.
Though we want to volunteer
We no longer volunteer .
Let your taxes pay the man who cuts the grass.
