Council Votes Against Democracy


May 14, 2001: The Council of the City of Kawartha Lakes voted against a motion endorsing the democratic process. The motion, presented by Councillor McGee, Ward 5:

Whereas the process leading up to the creation of the City of Kawartha Lakes was conducted in the absence of a referendum to determine the wishes of the majority of the residents of Victoria County and

Whereas This Council subscribes to basic principles of democracy, including freedom of expression and the rights of citizens to circulate and sign petitions

Resolved that this Council endorses the efforts expressed through the petition process to determine the will of the residents of the City of Kawwartha Lakes with respect to municipal restructuring.
