Essex council endorses de-amalgamation petition

ESSEX -- In a surprise 4-3 vote Monday, town council endorsed a de-amalgamation petition of almost 5,000 residents seeking to split the municipality into north and south halves.
Coun. Randy Voakes, one of two Essex ward councillors in the north, switched sides and made the motion to endorse the petition. It will now be sent back to the Ontario government, which has already rejected the petition once.
Voakes felt the petition contained too many signatures to be simply ignored. The claims of poor representation made by ratepayers from the Colchester South and Harrow wards should be thoroughly explored, he said
